AT PORTSOY HARBOUR just along from the Shore Inn and the building on the left of Portsoy Marble is Alexander Laird Brebners house (KN issue No. 16 ). The famous smugglers house dates from 1726 and the rear part of the L-plan house belongs to David Crighton.
David has put his beautiful courtyard garden and the character historic interior to good use as a new venture - Beggars Belief, serving excellent coffee and speciality teas. There are also locally home made muffins and shortbreads etc. available. (Cathy tells me they sell a lot of cakes.)
There are many welcome benefits such as: Its open daily, seven days a week, from 10.00am - 4.00pm and dogs are welcome in the courtyard (excellent to combine with dog walk). The situation of the house is amazing, being right on the historic harbour and with superb views from the front. The downstairs consists of the coffee bar area and several cubby holes/areas and rooms - all with superb character and original features. (Ships masts, beams...) The decor inside
is cosy with some interesting touches such as contemporary wall sculptures by Carn Standing and character furniture.
Teas are served in period bone china cups and saucers there is no better way to taste tea and a satisfying clink of china results.
